Coming Soon: Red Riding Hood

Release Date : April 21st, 2011 (Malaysia)
Director : Catherine Hardwicke
Starring : Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke, Lukas Haas

I wouldn't be so quick to accuse director Catherine Hardwicke of cashing in on her Twilight [2008] fame. She is a very respectable director with movies like Thirteen [2003] and Lords of Dogtown [2005] under her belt. It wasn't until Twilight when she received this worldwide recognition. But rightfully so because she took a 400 page novel about Bella creaming her panties thinking about how hot Edward Cullen is, and turn it into a very entertaining movie for girls and guys alike (Well, at least guys like me).

With regards to Red Riding Hood however, it's hard to argue if someone were to compare it to Twilight because... Well, just look at it;

A very metrosexual-looking young man (in the middle-ages?), frolicking in the woods, werewolves, forbidden love and a love triangle thrown in there as well... Anyone else seeing a pattern here? It's almost like they're just slapping the Red Riding Hood title there as an excuse to retell Twilight all over again.

But there's no denying that it does have a potential. If anything, it looks like anything but your everyday fairy tale. I have a feeling that it will be closer to the earlier versions of the tale, as told by the likes of Charles Perrault; a gruesome tale warning girls about the advances of men. It does help that they have Amanda Seyfried in the lead role, and she's not exactly a poster child for innocence if you know what I mean. With her very prominent... *ahem* female features and all.

In other words, I believe it will be a lot less about this;

... and more like this

Art by Jerry Cai
Darker, grittier... and potentially cheesier. From here on we can only wait and see.
