Transformers 1Malaysia

Movie Title: Mantera
Release Date: May 17th, 2012 (Malaysia)
Director: Muhd Aliyar Al-Kutthy
Starring: Tomok (-_-"), Shiqin Kamal, Kamaliya, Wael Al-Masri, Said Dashuk-Nighmatulin, Yank Kassim

It took about a year for this movie to come to my knowledge. I must confess that I can be as cynical as any other Malaysian, hence the reason why I scoffed when I saw the poster adorned on Cathay Damansara's Coming Soon section. But it had nothing to do with the idea of a pirated Transformers movie. Heck, even the original ones I looked upon with disdain. So no, it was seeing Tomok playing the lead role that made me immediately skeptical of the movie.

Not to mention it brought back memories I had long suppressed.

Bad ones...

In the future where man are on the brink of expanding our civilisation out into space, Lockout follows government agent Snow (Guy Pearce) who's on a mission to retrieve a mysterious briefcase, but then finds himself framed for a murder he did not commit. The Government sentences him to thirty years in stasis prison, just outside of Earth's atmosphere. Meanwhile, the U.S President's daughter Emilie (Maggie Grace) is on a Humanitarian mission to discover first hand what's it like on the stasis prison. Things go horribly wrong when a prison riot erupts during her trip, and the Government has no real choice but to send Snow to rescue her in exchange for freedom.

What NOT to Expect
1. Cliche-free
2. Intensity
Good enough for what it was. No less, no more.

Apt Title For a Movie Starring Danny Trejo

Movie Title: Bad Ass
Release Date: April 13th, 2012 (U.S)
Director: Craig Moss
Starring: Danny Trejo, Ron Perlman, Charles S. Dutton

Anybody knows where Danny Trejo ends and where his characters begin? Frankly I don't think there's such a thing. You see, his life story is a pretty interesting one. Grew up on the streets and got addicted to heroin at young age. He set his sights on becoming a boxer, which he kinda did, but in prison. Then a movie director helped turn his life around.

I don't recall his name, but Trejo was cast after the director got impressed enough with his boxing skills to offer him a prominent role in the film. And Danny Trejo has been playing the same role again and again. But somehow unlike Steven Seagal, it never gets old. But that's just me. Check out the trailer below, and tell me if you don't feel the same way.

William Shatner & Bohemian Rhapsody

I don't get the whole William Shatner jokes, the same way I didn't used to understand that Chuck Norris meme. But hey, I like Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and this is William Shatner... Uhh, "singing" it.

"Drive" Fan Art

I don't know about you, but I still watch Drive [2011] on a regular basis. There's just something so hauntingly beautiful about it, not to mention a refreshing take on a movie involving a getaway driver as the protagonist. Kind of like how Le Samourai [1967] was a "slow" movie about an assassin. Anyway, I saw Drive again last night, and wondered just many people love it as much as I do. Let's just say the amount of fan art I found was staggering!

Usually it takes years for a movie to garner a cult following this devoted. But I guess that's the power of the internet.

Tired of watching his little brother piss his life away, Stone enrolls Alex into the Navy, and the latter becomes a reluctant hero when the outer space gives Earth their response; In the form of warships.

What to Expect

Not a good mental picture to have, but good for laughs anyway.

Grand Theft Gaduh?

Movie Title: Berani Punya Budak
Release Date: April 26th, 2012 (Malaysia)
Director: Afdlin Shauki
Starring: Afdlin Shauki, Mike B., Supaksorn Chaimongkol, Adlin Aman Ramlie, Johan Raja Lawak, Awie, Nabil Ahmad

As disappointed as I am knowing that the masses aren't as crazy about Bunohan as I am, I guess I'm gonna have to be okay with it since even director Dain Said is cool with it. But then again, the movie is doing well overseas and years from now, people aren't gonna look back and say, "How awesome was Adnan Sempit 2?" No. It's Bunohan they'll remember. But anyway, enough bellyaching about that, here's an action movie from Afdlin Shauki that I know people are going to lap it up.

It's called Berani Punya Budak, and if it looks familiar to some of you, that's because it's a remake of a Thai movie called Brave, also directed by Afdlin Shauki. Frankly, I am excited about it since I like his body of work (although Misteri Jalan Lama [2011] wasn't my cup of tea) with Baik Punya Cilok [2005] being my favourite so far. Have a look at the trailer, it stirred the action movie fanboy in me.

FIXI #10: Invasi

I must say I didn't realise that my personal library is lacking in Science fiction books until I got my hands on a copy of Invasi, one of the two latest releases from FIXI. Yep, after going on a hiatus since December, FIXI's back with a new look. Check it out.

Invasi is exactly what it sounds like. Originally called Hero, it tells the tale of Ahmad Bayani, a white-collar worker with a tragic past who leads a hedonistic lifestyle. But just when the going gets good, it gets really really bad overnight; The world as he knows it becomes a battlefield between man and extraterrestrials. Previously a man who's content with one night stands, Bayani has to pick up a whole new set of skills altogether as he fights for survival along with his closest friend, Anuar.

Funny Review of a Back to the Future Novel

Hey fellas, I'm sorry again for not being as consistent with updates as I used to be. I'm going through a bit of a dry spell here, so I've been distracting myself by doing a couple of other things. Wish me get well soon, yah? Hahaha... But hey, here's a lil' something a friend of mine shared with me a while back. Basically it's a (funny) review of the novelisation of the first Back to the Future movie.

Learning The Alphabets Through Movies

Although to be honest, I have a hard time trying to figure out which stands for what. Especially for Sesame Street.
