I Want to Like This Movie, But...

... First impression's not too good.

Movie Title: Prince of the City
Release Date: December 27th, 2012 (Malaysia)
Director: Roslan Hussin
Starring: Julian Cheah, Michael Madsen, Aaron Aziz, Jehan Miskin, Tara Wallace

The last time I cringed this much from watching a movie trailer was when Edward Cullen and Bella did it for the first time. I kept telling myself that maybe it's the trailer that didn't do the movie justice. After all, they managed to entice the Michael Madsen to star in this movie, so that's gotta count for something, right? Sure, there are a couple of corny exchanges between the characters, but that doesn't prove anything, right?

Well, nobody can say for sure until December 27th, and before I let you watch the trailer, I'd like to share a couple of my favourite moments from it. It's so bad, it's funny to the point where I can't really form coherent thoughts, like I did with the aforementioned Twilight trailer. For starters, it's a half-baked movie trailer where the audio doesn't even connect with the visuals, and I don't mean that it doesn't sync. It's not a technical issue. Here, observe;

Quite a Misnomer, But It's Tom Cruise. So...

Movie Title: Jack Reacher
Release Date: December 20th, 2012 (Malaysia)
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Starring: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, David Oyelowo

Heard about this one already? What do you guys think about it? The reason I ask is because I'm wondering if you guys have the same doubts as I did, when I first saw the trailer. Granted, I'm not very well-versed with the character, and the only Jack Reacher novel I've read is the one called The Hard Way. All I know about the character is that he's huge, standing at 6 foot and 5 inches, and he's pretty unstoppable.

Tom Cruise isn't huge, but then again he has rather successfully played larger-than-life characters in the past, and my first impression of Jack Reacher is pretty good. I know fanboys would dislike it no matter what, but for the rest of us moviegoers, there is a possibility that the movie's gonna be pretty good as a whole. If the trailer is any indication, it's gonna be both thrilling and fun.

Watch until the end of the trailer to see what I mean.

Istanbul, Aku Datang! [2012]

Director: Bernard Chauly
Writer: Rafidah Abdullah
Starring: Lisa Surihani, Beto Kusyairy, Tomok
Genre: Romantic comedy
Rating: General
Comment: "A Romantic comedy with heart. Oh, you'd be surprised how rare that is..."

Naive and hopelessly romantic Dian (Lisa Surihani) travels all the way to Istanbul, where her doctor-to-be boyfriend Azad (Tomok) is studying, with a plan; She's going to charm her way into getting him to propose by the end of her stay. One thing she didn't take into account is how Azad wouldn't have her stay under the same roof as him and his two guy friends. A scam later and she finds herself sharing an apartment with another Malaysian guy named Harris (Beto Kusyairy). From there, Dian tries to juggle between proceeding with her initial plan, while keeping Azad in the dark about her new housemate.

What to Expect
1. Charm, and simplicity
2. Good chemistry between actors
3. Casting was just perfect
4. A sitcom feel to it

What NOT to Expect
1. Cuti-cuti Istanbul
2. Much focus on the fish-out-of-water element
One of the best Malaysian movies you'll see this year.
